NEW FOSSIL DISCOVERIES FROM FRANCE AND MOROCCO SHED LIGHT ON THE ORIGIN OF STARFISH AND BRITTLE STARS IN THE GREAT ORDOVICIAN BIODIVERSIFICATION EVENT

DR AARON W. HUNTER - DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES - UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

ASTEROZOANS INCLUDING STARFISH (ASTEROIDS) AND THEIR CLOSE RELATIVES THE BRITTLE STARS (OPHIUROIDS) ARE AMONGST THE MOST INSTANTLY RECOGNISABLE AND ICONIC MARINE ANIMALS. THEY ARE A DOMINANT AND SUCCESSFUL GROUP OF LIVING ECHINODERMS BASED ON THEIR DIVERSITY, ABUNDANCE, AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION. DESPITE THEIR ECOLOGICAL SUCCESS AND A FOSSIL RECORD SPANNING MORE THAN 480 MILLION YEARS, THE EARLY EVOLUTION OF ASTEROZOANS AND THEIR ECHINODERM COUSINS MORE GENERALLY, REMAINS A MYSTERY. IN-FACT, THEY SEEM TO APPEAR SUDDENLY IN THE EARLY ORDOVICIAN WITH NO APPARENT ANCESTOR IN THE CAMBRIAN. NEW DISCOVERIES FROM FRANCE AND MOROCCO HAVE BEGUN TO RESOLVE THIS MYSTERY.

EXCEPTIONALLY PRESERVED FOSSILS, COMBINED WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY HAVE ALLOWED US TO RECONSTRUCT THE SEQUENCE OF EVOLUTION OF THE ASTEROZOANS (WITH A COMPREHENSIVE PHYLOGENETIC FRAMEWORK). WE EXPLORE THE EARLIEST COMMON ANCESTORS THE SOMASTEROIDS AND THEIR CAMBRIAN ECHINODERM RELATIVES, INCLUDING A FOSSIL, WHICH IS THE EARLIEST STARFISH LIKE ANIMAL SO FAR RECORDED IN THE FOSSIL RECORD. WE THEN FOLLOW THESE EXCEPTIONAL FOSSILS THROUGH THE ORDOVICIAN AS TRUE OPHIUROIDS AND ASTEROIDS APPEAR AND SHOW HOW THEY RAPIDLY DIVERSIFIED DURING THE BIOTIC REVOLUTION WE CALL THE GREAT ORDOVICIAN BIODIVERSIFICATION EVENT. WE DEMONSTRATE THAT THESE ANIMALS SURVIVED UNTIL THE PERMIAN, WITH SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS STILL FOUND IN THE OCEANS TODAY.

Wonderful photos

Wonderful Photos

A correspondent has brought this wonderful set of photographs to my attention. You will need to click all the links (the small circles at the bottom of the page) to see all the photos.

Originally the photos were on this BBC page but I suspect copyright issues raised their head. But the text is also well worth giving your attention to.

An interesting exercise is to decide which photo on the first link corresponds to which piece of text on the second link!

Dead Sea Sinkholes

New Theory for Sinkholes

It was thought that the numerous sinkholes round the Dead Sea were caused by the presence of a salt layer. As the salt was dissolved away by run-off, cavities would form and sinkholes would ensue.

This idea was soon abandoned when no salt was found! Geophysics came to the rescue. Using a "wheelbarrow-mounted vibrating source" - this I would like to see! - a shear wave reflection image was obtained of an alluvial fan. This showed the composition and layering of the fan to a depth of 200 metres. No salt was found but some layers reflected seismic waves very poorly. It was suggested that sand had been washed away from the layers so, instead of forming compact layers, they formed weakened layers of gravel and boulders. These eventually give way and form a sinkhole.

You can read all about it HERE.

Field Course - The Geology of Northern Cyprus and NW Turkey
When
19 – 31 Oct 2018
Description
Field Course: The Geology of Northern Cyprus and NW Turkey.
Dates will be for a week to 10 days trip around a period from 19th to 31st  October (half term in Glos). Half the time will be spent in N Cyprus and half in Turkey, in the area around and to the south west of Istanbul. A wide variety of geology is exposed; from the  Kyrenia Terrane of N Cyprus, spectacularly exposed in the narrow, and still rising, mountain range that forms the entire northernmost coast, but deeply buried beneath the younger sediments of the Mesoria Basin to the south. Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments were folded and metamorphosed during subduction in the late Cretaceous, then exhumed, eroded and covered by latest Cretaceous-Palaeogene sediments and volcanics, then by an Eocene melange; the whole being thrust and folded by Eocene collision with Troodos. Turkey was not a single entity until the Early Tertiary, when several continental fragments with independent Palaeozoic and Mesozoic geological histories were assembled during a complex sequence of events leading to the collision of Gondwana and Laurasia. We shall examine the Istanbul and Sakarya terranes, which were detached parts of Laurasia, undergoing Triassic subduction, collision and obduction/exhumation of ophiolites, including some of the best high pressure metamorphic rocks in the world.
