Isostasy in action!

Hurricane Harvey Moved the Earth!

The rains associated with Hurricane Harvey caused considerable flooding. We are told that up to 33 trillion gallons of water fell. That amount of water I calculate as weighing about 125 billion tonnes. (I assume the gallons are US ones).

And this weight was enough to push the earth's surface down by up to 2 cm. If an ice sheet can do it I suppose a flood can as well. The surprising thing to me is the speed with which the earth moved. You can read all about it HERE.
