The Triassic rocks near Sully and Penarth (50 miles west of Bristol), near Cardiff, were deposited around the edge of a lake or inland sea in which the Mercia Mudstone/ Keuper Marl was deposited. The Trias overlies the Carboniferous limestone which locally created hills and cliffs around the lake; wave-cut shore-platforms and wave-notches were cut into the limestone cliffs, and screes of Carb Lst debris were formed, locally reworked into beach gravel breccias. A range of shoreline limestones was developed – with stromatolites, ripples, tepees, birdseyes, and these are interbedded with soils (calcretes) and evaporites, mostly gypsum-anhydrite, since replaced by dolomite and quartz. Dinosaur footprints are also present in the muddy marginal lacustrine sediments.
The day is dependent on the tides and we shall visit Swanbridge, Sully Island, Bendrick Rock and Lavernock Point.
Meet at 10.30 a.m. at the public car-park at Swanbridge, near the Captain’s Wife pub (postcode CF64 5UG), opposite Sully Island.
Travel via the M4 to junction 33, then head south towards Barry on the A4232, A4050, A4231 and B4267 through Sully to Swanbridge. AA Route planner suggests 1 hr 30 mins and ~65 miles from Bath.

June 22nd - Vale of Wardour field trip

This field trip involves a walk of around 5 miles which will take us across the vale from one side of the eroded anticline to the other. The walk will start at Dinton in the National Trust car park for Philips House on St Mary’s Rd, (SP3 5HH, OS sheet 130 009316) and finish with a pub lunch at the Wyndham Pub in Dinton on the Hindon Rd (SP3 5EG, OS130 019315). Those who say they wish to attend will be sent a menu in due course so that lunches may be ordered ahead of time and be ready for the end of the walk.
We shall meet at 10.00, the walk taking about 2.5/3 hours.
WGG Guide on the Vale of Wardour would be a useful reference; available on the day (£1.95).
You are welcome to join us on a first come first signed-up basis. We have put a limit on numbers so an early response is recommended.

Chernobyl exclusion zone - 30 years on

The world’s worst nuclear disaster took place on the 26th April 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the town of Pripyat, in the then Ukrainian SSR. The battle to contain the contamination cost in excess of an estimated 18 billion roubles, and involved over 500,000 workers from across the Soviet Union. There is now a 30 km exclusion zone in effect around the plant. The effects of the disaster were felt far wider than just the Ukraine – it was only in November 2012 that the last of the sheep movement restrictions was lifted in the UK.

3rd March - Landscape dynamics, climate and tectonics

Landscape dynamics, climate and tectonics:

Both tectonics and climate profoundly influence the erosional-depositional processes that shape the Earth’s surface.  Moreover, the magnitude, locus and characteristics of sediment export from catchments to basins play a fundamental role in determining depositional stratigraphy.  While progress has been made in understanding the response of landscape systems to tectonics, the extent to which the Earth’s surface is either sensitive, or buffered, to rapid climate change remains extremely contentious.
This talk examines how geomorphic, sedimentological and numerical modelling techniques can be used to constrain how the earth surface processes are influenced by tectono-climatic boundary conditions, and how they govern the production of stratigraphy. Field examples from California and the Mediterranean explore the extent to which we can now quantitatively “invert” stratigraphy for tectonic or climatic forcing, and highlight some of the problems that still remain.

Thomas Hawkins and his Sea Dragons – a mad, bad fossil collector?
Stephen Locke 7:30pm, Wednesday 24 February
Stephen Locke will give a talk on the controversial 19th century fossil collector Thomas Hawkins. Thomas Hawkins (1810-1889) was the son of a Somerset Farmer/Cattle Dealer who lived at Glastonbury. He inherited a considerable sum of money with which he was able to indulge his passion for collecting fossil marine reptiles from his local area and Lyme Regis. He was undoubtedly a highly eccentric character and was considered by some of his contemporaries to be mad. He wrote several books on the subject of “Sea Dragons” in a style that has been described as lurid. Stephen’s talk will attempt a reassessment of the life and character of Thomas Hawkins who was a fascinating local naturalist. It will be of interest to a wide range of BNS members and previous knowledge of geology will not be required.

by Dr. Sarah Greene, NERC Independent Research Fellow,
School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol
The Cotham Marble is an uppermost Triassic carbonate microbialite (a rock built by the actions of microscopic life) from the southwestern UK, long prized by collectors for its beauty. Sometimes called the Landscape Marble because its internal structures resemble hills, trees, and skies, the Cotham Marble has been the subject of fascination, scientific investigation, and speculation about its formation for at least 250 years. Only in the past few years, however, have we come to recognize that microbialites like the Cotham Marble can yield truly exceptional archives of past climates. In this lecture, Dr. Greene will recount the history of study of the Cotham Marble and describe some new theories about how and why it formed. She will also describe what brand new geochemical studies of the Cotham Marble are teaching us about the Triassic-Jurassic climate in the UK and the end-Triassic global mass extinction event.

My Ramblers walk on Sunday morning passes along Coxhill Lane, a hollow way in the Upper Greensand, much-used locally for building with doggers and for fossils.
Our 4 ½ mile walk starts in Potterne. The walk, which is graded as “moderate” goes via the hill at Potterne Field, out to Ninehills, then past Sleight farm down into the Stert valley, and then back via Potterne wood and Coxhill lane. Please bring a snack/coffee and we aim to be back at the cars for lunch. There are pubs in Potterne.
Please park thoughtfully in Silver street (ST 998 586 on O/S Explorer 130) 
Lifts are suggested at £2.40. and we leave Bath Road car park (ST 918 734 on O/S Explorer 156) at 10:00a.m.

For years the geology of Anglesey has caused controversy amongst those studying its complex arrangement of seemingly unrelated fault blocks, particularly the status of the PreCambrian (or are they?) granites and gneisses, sedimentary extrusive sequence, blueschists, ophiolitic/deep ocean facies and melange. So complex that the very stratigraphy has been completely overhauled and re-interpreted twice during the last 100 years. In comparison, the thin and deformed unconformably overlying Lower Palaeozoic rocks are simple, as are the Upper Palaeozoic sediments, with their excellent environmental indicators. On a final note of controversy - why is Anglesey, composed largely of ancient, resistant rocks, so flat in comparison to the nearby mountains of Snowdonia? This talk and the field trip to follow, will attempt to outline the main elements of the geology of the island and the evidence that has produced such geological controversy.
This talk will be followed by a visit to Anglesey in 2016.

November 5th - The Geology of Decorative and Building Stones at Kingston Lacy; the William Bankes Palladian Mansion and Park, near Wimborne, Dorset.

Kingston Lacy Hall is a major, but little known, competitor to Chatsworth for decorative polished stone; notably for foreign stones of Grand Tour Provenance. Two dozen notable rocks from the African Precambrian basement, Mesozoic Sediments and many resulting from the Alpine and Apennine Orogenies have been used extensively. They will be named, described and their provenance explored.

The course will start at 7.30 pm on 27th and is based at the Harbour Hotel in Cemaes Bay. The course ends at lunch time on 30th May near the Menai Straits bridge, but details will be given of other sites to visit for those who wish to stay on.
The cost for tuition is £40 of which only £20 is refundable.
Transport is by private car to the location. Sharing is advisable during the course due to narrow roads. Book your own accommodation, but if you do not stay at the Harbour Hotel, please be nearby and be prepared to eat the evening meal there, to enable discussion in the evening session.

3rd December this year, Dave Green is giving a talk on the complex and controversial geology of Anglesey. 
Firm expressions of interest are requested after that date, with payment shortly after (cheques to Bath Geological Society). There is a maximum of 20 places on the course.

Mystery object found on the Bath GS Manor Farm trip


The object above was found at Borrow Pit, Manor Farm, Aust - a Triassic mystery.  An expert's opinion is as follows:-
"My interpretation of this is that it lacks the symmetry and detail to be a fossil animal in its own right, though algal activity may have played a part in producing the lumps on the surface.  It has a slightly laminated appearance and I believe it to be a sedimentary accretion.  Whether it has a nucleus of any kind could only be resolved by sectioning and polishing it, but I did notice the tell-tale signs of pyrite decay products around the edge of the central lamina.
Pyrite is widespread in the Westbury Formation.  It exists as individual cubes, clusters (framboids) and granules, and is largely responsible for the bluish black colour of the sediment. It arose as a result of the reaction between iron hydroxide gels (these are excreted by algal blooms) and sulphur liberated by sulphur-reducing bacteria sourced from organic matter such as coprolites or decaying plant material. The effect of one of these FeS clusters (they only need to be a few microns in diameter) at the sediment/water interface is to create a patch wherein the pH of the pore seawater is considerably reduced in relation to its surroundings; an acid bubble, if you like. Trapped within the sediment, this can have the effect of attracting, dissolving and then precipitating any calcareous material suspended in the seawater.
Bear in mind that the environment at this time was in the process of changing from the brackish marine conditions of the first Upper Triassic incursion, to the fluvial channel conditions of the much more calcareous Cotham Member, and ultimately culminated in the lagoonal, nodular calcareous mudstone strings of the pre "White Lias"  After the desert conditions of the Keuper, things became more and more propitious for shelled marine life, so it sort of fed off itself and there would have been more and more calcareous material present in the water, starting from small beginnings. Rhythmic precipitation of this sort, discussed by Tony Hallam in about 1966 I think, responds to seasonal and even diurnal temperature and salinity changes and proceeds from small pea-sized "nummular" nodules to gradually bigger ones and finally coalescing into continuous beds. Hope this helps."

Micropalaeontology is the study of microscopic fossils and has been used extensively by the hydrocarbons industry for the stratigraphical correlation of rock successions (especially recovered in boreholes). In many quarrying or engineering projects stratigraphical “control” is also required and this will be explained using the site investigation for the Thames Barrier and the construction of the Channel Tunnel as the leading examples.
