The Western Regional Group is pleased to invite Jon Esser to give an overview of the Great Western Electrification Programme from the perspective of the geotechnical discipline and also drawing on some wider project challenges.
The Great Western Electrification Programme (GWEp) aims to electrify one of Britain’s oldest and busiest railways, providing greener, more reliable journeys and improving connections across southern England and South Wales. Electrification will improve services and help support economic growth across many of our cities and towns.
Using case studies from the GWEp network, Jon will be presenting the main considerations and challenges that have been faced by the geotechnical team, from initial design development through to detailed design and during installation.

Thomas Hawkins and his Sea Dragons – a mad, bad fossil collector?

Stephen Locke will give a talk on the controversial 19th century fossil collector Thomas Hawkins. Thomas Hawkins (1810-1889) was the son of a Somerset Farmer/Cattle Dealer who lived at Glastonbury. He inherited a considerable sum of money with which he was able to indulge his passion for collecting fossil marine reptiles from his local area and Lyme Regis. He was undoubtedly a highly eccentric character and was considered by some of his contemporaries to be mad. He wrote several books on the subject of “Sea Dragons” in a style that has been described as lurid. Stephen’s talk will attempt a reassessment of the life and character of Thomas Hawkins who was a fascinating local naturalist. It will be of interest to a wide range of BNS members and previous knowledge of geology will not be required.

The talk will be on the reuse of hydrocarbon impacted material dredged from a reservoir on the former BP Llandarcy Oil Refinery. The talk will describe the process by which a hazardous waste material was recovered and then combined with another hazardous waste to produce an inert material that could be reused on site to construct a highway embankment.

The Amazon River drains the largest hydraulically connected land surface on the planet, and its various tributaries make up some of the planet’s largest rivers. The evolution of these rivers supports spectacular landscapes and floodplain biodiversity, and we report that the physiographic makeup of the Amazon Basin is determining sediment supplies that influence how the rivers and floodplains of the Amazon are evolving through time.

The Western Regional Group is pleased to invite you to an evening presentation on rifting in Africa.
The rifting of continents and eventual formation of ocean basins is a fundamental component of plate tectonics, yet the mechanism for break-up is poorly understood. Rifting of the continents leading to plate rupture occurs by a combination of mechanical deformation and magma intrusion, but the available driving forces have been estimated to be as much as an order of magnitude smaller than those required to rupture thick continental lithosphere. The East Africa Rift system (EARS) is an ideal place to study this; it captures the initiation of a rift in the south through to incipient oceanic spreading in north-eastern Ethiopia - Afar.

As part of the drive for a low carbon economy, offshore renewables are becoming increasingly important with major investments in offshore wind farms expected over the next ten years. With the increasing size of offshore wind farms being constructed in deeper waters with complex ground conditions, a reliable ground model and engineering parameters are essential for efficient design and construction.

The mining industry operates in an environment increasingly demanding of its products. However, establishing the moral case for taking natural resources from one area to benefit another with most of the profits leaving the host country is becoming increasingly difficult. The same is true of the often irreparable change to delicate ecosystems from mining - why should plants, animals and peoples suffer, often die, in one place to benefit development in another while dominantly enriching distant investors?

29th October - Chemical Analysis at the Natural History Musuem, London & Chemical Zoning in Volcanic Phenocrysts Dr. Emma Humphreys-Williams, Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum, London not only provides an area for the display and curation of thousands of specimens from the natural world, but also houses extensive imaging and analytical facilities that perform work for both in-house researchers and external clients. The chemical analysis performed in the labs covers a range of techniques (e.g. ICP-AES, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, CHN, IC) but is mainly focused on determining major and trace element compositions in natural samples. Emma will give a brief presentation of the work they do and the range of techniques that have developed as a result of the unique environment. The second half of Emma's talk will be devoted to her research, which concerns the petrogenesis of intra-plate magmas, in this case, an example from Calatrava, Spain. This work has focused on clinopyroxene and olivine crystals which exhibit a range of textures and chemical compositions, but help to inform how these unusual melts form.
