Dave Green - Planetary Geology
When
Mon, 11 June, 19:30 – 21:30
Description
Planetary Geology. Monday 16th April, for 10 weeks, until 9th July (not 7th nor 28th May). The state of knowledge of the planets of the solar system has improved vastly in the past 40 years as a result of space missions and improved technology for observation and analysis. The course will examine the results of this activity and evidence for these interpretations in terms of the internal structure, magnetism and geophysics of these bodies; their tectonics and volcanism, the effects of impacting bodies, and the surface conditions –atmospheres, oceans, sedimentary features and biology. Held at Wynstones School, Stroud Road, Whaddon, Gloucester from 7.30-9.30pm on Mondays. Cost £70.

OU Geol Soc Wessex - Excursion, Geology of the Winscombe Area
When
Saturday, 16 Jun 2018
Where
Winscombe, Somerset (map)
Description
Winscombe area Geology, Mendip Hills, Somerset

Andy Bradley grew up in Winscombe and was a keen caver in his late teens and this started his interest in geology and geomorphology in general and West Mendip in particular.  He moved away at eighteen to study maths at university but he retained his interest and attended a wonderful university extension course in geology at the then Goldsmith College, University of London. For many years he spent all his holidays walking, climbing and travelling with geographers and geologists. Over the last ten years it has slowly dawned on him that the landscape in which he grew up, and which he took for granted, has a uniquely fascinating story to tell and is a geological and geomorphological gem.

Andy says that, although there will be an opportunity to look at the lower formations of the Carboniferous Limestone (Black rock Limestone & Burrington Oolite), the main emphasis will be on the structure of the pericline, its erosion in the Triassic and subsequent recent exhumation.  He hopes to convince you that much of the modern landscape in the West Mendip and its surrounds is essentially Triassic in origin. In Burrington Coombe we shall see more evidence of the ancient landscape juxtaposed with Pleistocene features and the role of geology in cave formation.

Wonderful scenery, excellent geology with an enthusiastic leader
