Where
St Peters Church Hall, 43 Church Rd, Earley, Reading RG6 1EY, UK (map)
Description
The Rare Earth Elements and their Minerals

The rare earth elements (REE) have progressed over time from being obscure chemical curiosities to prized "strategic” materials central to many aspects of modern technology. This, combined with the very uneven distribution of their ores across the world and the problems attendant on their isolation and purification, has created an interesting "geo-political-economic” conundrum – the full resolution of which is not yet in sight.
This talk will outline the occurrence and mineralogy of REE containing minerals (examples of a number of which will be shown) and will touch on the isolation of the individual REE species. A brief survey of the current scientific and commercial applications of REE will be given. This will lead into a discussion of the current economic and political situation with respect to REE – and possible futures. Some suggestions for further reading will be given.

Speaker: Michael Doel

Venue: St Peter's Church Hall, Church Rd, Earley, Reading, RG6 1EY

Date: September 4th 2018 (Tuesday)

The Geology of the Earth’s Oceans Past and Present

Dave Green, Geostudies: A JOINTLY ORGANISED BRLSI-BGS TALK

The talk will examine the current state of understanding of the geological processes operating in the oceans and their effects. Our knowledge and interpretation has changed quite radically since the 1950s, and continues to develop, enabling better understanding of the geology of ophiolites, such as the Lizard and Ballantrae; the environmental relationships between plate tectonic processes, the oceans and the mantle, and our interpretation of the geology of our near neighbour planets. Changes that are thought to have taken place in the oceans through geological time will be discussed as well as the anthropogenic effects of the present.

SAM SCRIVEN
9 SEPTEMBER 2018

GEOLOGY AND FOSSIL HUNTING

Sam Scriven was born in Weymouth and studied geology at the University of Plymouth to gain a M.Geol.  He spent four years as the geologist at Charmouth Heritage Centre.  He has worked for nine years as the geologist for the Jurassic Coast team.  Sam is now Programme Manager (Heritage and Conservation) for the Jurassic Coast trust based in Bridport.  Needless to say he has an intimate knowledge of the Jurassic Coast and its fossils.  In May 2016 he published “Fossils of the Jurassic Coast” which is available in paperback.  He lives in Bridport.

OUGS will be joined by Jurassic Coast Trust staff, volunteers and Jurassic Coast ambassadors for this excursion.

We shall look at the Lias west of Lyme Regis with the Cretaceous beds lying unconformably on to top.  There is a wealth of geology here and we shall still be able to visit the “ammonite graveyard” and, with extra daylight hours, there will be plenty of opportunity to collect fossils

The total distance of the excursion is about 3 miles on varying beach material. Some slippery conditions must be expected - a walking pole can aid stability. Hammer and hand lens should be brought and collecting bags will be useful.

To book a place contact: Jeremy Cranmer at wessexdaytrips@ougs.org
