Glamorgan Heritage Coast: DGAG Residential weekend
When
3 – 5 May 2019
Where
Premier Inn, Pencoed, Bridgend, Dorset, CF35 5HY, United Kingdom
Description
DGAG Residential weekend 2019
This year we are visiting the Glamorgan Heritage Coast (south-east Wales). Dates: Fri.3rd May to Sunday 5th May. Some may want to stay over Sunday night and do more on Monday. Leaders: John Scott and Kelvin Huff
Come and view the results of Dinantian storms (Lower Carboniferous), the effects of the Variscan and later orogenies, Triassic desert wadis and lakes where early dinosaurs roamed. See the Triassic/Jurassic boundary and unconformities, a rare Jurassic rocky shoreline and island edge plus spectacular faulting. This is all topped off by Pleistocene and Recent deposits.
Suggested accommodation is at the Premier Inn, Bridgend CF35 5HY. (M4 Jct.35) This is near Pencoed, make sure you don’t book at Bridgend Central. Book early as it’s a Bank Holiday Weekend. A Table restaurant/pub and a McDonald’s (if desperation creeps in) are nearby.
Cindy Howells of the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff has offered to show us ‘behind the scenes’ on Friday 3rd. May. We’ll make a stop here on our way to Pencoed. Timings to follow along with further trip details.
There will be a small charge to cover leaders’ expenses and handouts.
Please let Kelvin know if you want to come along and he’ll add you to the list.

When
Sat, 18 May, 09:30 – 16:00
Where

Description
Bolton Hill Quarry, near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
Leader: Sid Howells
Due to limited parking at the site meet at 0930 in the lower part of the large car park near the youth
hostel at Broad Haven (North), to the west of Haverfordwest (SM 863 140), where we will condense the
cars to as few as possible. Bring a packed lunch.
The quarry is operated by a local company (GD Harries & Sons Ltd) and is working the Johnston Diorite
Complex of late Precambrian age, which was subsequently intruded by basaltic dykes. Effects of
magmatic mixing and hydrothermal alteration can be seen and there is also an interesting exposure of
the Johnston Thrust where Coal Measures form the footwall below the diorite. Weathering has
penetrated quite deeply into some parts of the diorite and glacial till forms the overburden. The quarry
produces most of the road stone used in west Wales as well as concrete. Diorite boulders are used for
coastal protection and a recent contract involved the supply of high specification rock armour for
Hinkley Point taken by barge from Pembroke Dock.
If there is time we might also visit Syke Quarry where the Benton Volcanics (also late Precambrian) are
faulted-bounded within Silurian sandstones.
IMPORTANT: Booking for this trip is essential: Safety helmets, high vis tops and steel toe-capped
boots must be worn and the group will need to be under supervision at all times. For those who don't have
these, they can be hired for the day for £3 per item, but we need to know in advance what is needed including
size for boots and also jackets (S, M, L, XL, XXL) as they have to be brought in from elsewhere. When
booking please let me know if you require any safety clothing and, if so, the sizes.
